Nachos were invented in 1943 by Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya, a maître d' at a restaurant in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico. One day, a group of American soldiers came into the restaurant and asked for something to eat. Anaya quickly whipped up a dish of tortilla chips topped with cheese, jalapeños, and tomatoes. The soldiers loved the dish and asked for the recipe. Anaya named the dish "nachos" after himself. Nachos quickly became a popular dish in Mexico and the United States, and they are now a staple of Tex-Mex cuisine.
