The history of these pastries can be traced back to the Ottoman Empire, where they were a popular dessert among the elite. The pastries were originally filled with a variety of nuts, including almonds, pistachios, and walnuts. Over time, the recipe evolved and the pastries became more standardized, with almonds becoming the most common filling. Today, these pastries are still popular throughout the Middle East and the Mediterranean region.

Why It Works
  • The phyllo dough is thin and crispy, which provides a nice contrast to the sweet and nutty filling.
  • The almond filling is made with a combination of ground almonds, sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice, which gives it a complex and flavorful taste.
  • The sugar syrup adds a touch of sweetness and shine to the pastries, making them irresistible.
